There are 10 women from TBC and surrounding synagogues who are volunteering at the Federal Correctional Institute in Danbury. On the last Friday night of each month, a few of us visit the prison and participate in their service. We do not lead the service but rather everyone reads (in English) a small portion of the text.  Cantor Sobel prepared a CD for us to use during the service to provide some additional spirituality and ruauch. After the service, we usually schmooze a bit with the inmates; and we prepare some type of d’var torah, or topic to discuss.  Often we related our discussion to a holiday, torah portion, Israel, or general topic of interest to Jewish women (e.g., what is their favorite Passover memory, or who they are named after and what they know about that person).

These are forgotten Jewish women who really need some connection to the outside world.   We represent the good and just Jewish women who can be role models for them.  Each time we leave the prison, we all feel so satisfied that we have been able to make such a difference with just a little bit of effort.
