Family Tradition
This group of en plein air landscape paintings spans over a century of artistic creation across three generations of a single family, featuring the work of Sarah King, William Alan Couper (1891–1972), and Richard Couper (1886–1918). Growing up surrounded by these paintings, Sarah King was deeply impacted by her great-uncle, and great-grandfather’s work and the enduring legacy of landscape art.
King began her career painting the exact same landscapes her family has returned to for over one hundred years. Influenced by generations of family artists, she has spent her career retracing her ancestors’ steps. This journey included attending Hollins University and visiting Villa Ball in Florence, Italy—the home of renowned sculptor Thomas Ball (grandfather to Richard and William) where the Couper brothers were born and raised at the turn of the last century. King also later studied at the New York Studio School, a historic space once used by Daniel Chester French, a mentee whom Thomas Ball frequently visited.
This exhibition brings together a series of plein air landscapes by King alongside the historic family pieces that directly inspired her career and legacy. Having spent years studying her family history and hearing the stories of Richard and William, King uses these landscapes as a bridge between generations, creating a timeless conversation about the profound impact of nature, family, and art.
