Overflow Homeless Shelter volunteers arrive at the First Congregational Church, Danbury at 9:00 p.m. and stay until 7:00 a.m. Each night we have 2 volunteers, usually one male and one female. We usually cover 3 weeks each season, which runs from mid-November to the end of March, weather dependent.

All you need to bring is a sleeping bag/blanket and pillow. There is a good cot for volunteers to use.

Clients are signed in by regular shelter reps being sure each client has been screened at the regular shelter.  Volunteers serve hot chocolate and snacks. There are usually plenty of snacks there but some volunteers bring fruit, e.g. clementines or apples. Coffee is set up and on a timer to be ready in the morning. Lights are out by 10:00 p.m. Most of the clients are regulars, so know exactly what is expected. They are very respectful and very appreciative to have a warm place to spend the night!

Wake up is at about 6:15 am to enable everyone to be ready to leave by 7:00 a.m. Volunteers serve coffee in the morning as everyone straightens up their area. Most are then on their way to  breakfast served at Dorothy Day Hospitality House at 7:00 a.m.

In the morning, one of the volunteers sends out an email reporting the night's events and the need for any supplies.
